Official City Roundup for Sunday, March 8, 2026

Official notices for Sunday, March 8, 2026, include critical transportation alerts due to major downtown events, an active health advisory regarding local wildlife, and updates to municipal park and coastal regulations.

Health Advisory: Rat Lungworm Parasite Detected

San Diego County health officials have issued a public advisory following the detection of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, commonly known as rat lungworm, in local wildlife and zoo animals. This brain-eating parasite has been identified in several locations, including La Mesa, Bonita, and the College Area. Residents are advised to take the following precautions to prevent transmission to humans and pets:

  • Thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables that may have been exposed to snail or slug slime.
  • Avoid consuming raw or undercooked snails, frogs, freshwater crabs, or prawns.
  • Monitor children and pets to ensure they do not handle slugs or snails.
  • Exercise caution when drinking from garden hoses, as slugs may seek moisture inside the nozzles.
  • Eliminate standing water and garden debris that attract snails, slugs, and rats near residential areas.

Transportation Alert: Major Downtown Street Closures

Two major events scheduled for Sunday, March 8, will result in extensive road closures and transit detours in the downtown and Waterfront areas:

  • Hot Chocolate 15k/5k: From 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., significant delays and stop closures will affect MTS Route 3 and Route 1. Passengers should plan for detours and use alternate boarding locations at 16th & Market Street.
  • Annual Women’s Day March: Beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Waterfront Park, this event will impact traffic through 2:00 p.m. Affected transit lines include Routes 2, 7, 11, 20, 120, 215, 225, 235, 901, and 992.

Commuters are encouraged to utilize the San Diego Trolley to connect with bus services at the City College Transit Station to bypass heavy pedestrian traffic and surface street congestion.

Park and Coastal Regulations

The City of Del Mar has officially implemented a new safety ordinance prohibiting the digging of holes deeper than two feet on all public beaches. The regulation also bans burying individuals below sand level or leaving holes unattended. This measure is intended to prevent collapse hazards and ensure the safety of emergency vehicles. Additionally, the City of San Diego confirms that Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve has fully reopened its trails and upper parking lot following the completion of comprehensive accessibility and utility upgrades.

Public Service Announcements

The Housing Authority of the County of San Diego reminds residents that applications for the Project-Based Voucher (PBV) waitlist for the Mirasol Meadows and Villa Serena Phase II developments will open on Monday, March 9, at 7:30 a.m. Furthermore, the 30-day public comment period for the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Annual Plan remains open through March 24, 2026.
