Holiday Traffic Overview

Good morning, San Diego. Today is Monday, January 19, 2026, and in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, commuters can expect significantly lighter traffic volumes on major arteries. With many schools, government offices, and businesses closed, the typical morning rush on the I-5 and I-15 corridors is expected to be minimal throughout the day. However, those traveling for holiday events or recreational activities should remain aware of specific transit alerts and planned maintenance projects that remain in effect.

Public Transit and Service Alerts

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has announced that most bus and Trolley routes will operate on a normal weekday schedule today. This is a departure from the typical Sunday schedule often seen on federal holidays, providing more frequent service for those who do have to work. Specifically, the Orange Line Trolley has resumed its regular schedule this morning following rail improvement projects over the weekend between Courthouse and the Massachusetts Avenue Station.

Commuters should be aware of a potential service disruption involving Transdev, which operates several MTS bus and Access services. Due to ongoing personnel constraints that began earlier this weekend, some routes may experience delays or missed trips. Passengers are encouraged to check the real-time MTS Alerts and Detours page before heading to their stop. Additionally, while most services are running, the Vintage Trolley and Rural Routes 891 and 892 will not be in operation today.

Roadworks and Nightly Closures

Caltrans District 11 reports that while most major construction activities are paused for the holiday, specific nightly work continues. Drivers in the North County area should note that the southbound I-15 connector to eastbound SR-78 will be closed tonight from 9:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. Detours will be in place, but late-night travelers should plan for additional travel time. In the downtown area, track maintenance continues near the trolley lines; while this work occurs overnight to avoid service impacts, residents may notice increased noise in the East Village area.

Holiday Events and Parking

While the major MLK Day parade took place yesterday, local celebrations continue today at the Balboa Park Activity Center starting at 10:00 a.m. Expect moderate congestion and limited parking near Park Boulevard and the surrounding areas of the park. Regarding parking enforcement, the City of San Diego will not enforce parking meters, yellow commercial zones, or short-term time limits today. However, all other parking regulations, including red, white, and blue zones, will remain in effect. For those looking to spend the holiday outdoors, California State Parks are offering free vehicle day-use entry today at participating locations.
