In-custody death followed apparent hanging in single-occupancy cell

A 34-year-old man who was being held at San Diego Central Jail while facing a murder charge has been identified by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office after dying following what authorities described as an apparent self-inflicted hanging.

Deputies found the man hanging inside his assigned cell on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at about 2:55 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said. The man was housed alone. Deputies called 911, requested medical staff assistance inside the facility and began life-saving measures.

San Diego Fire-Rescue paramedics took over care when they arrived and transported the man to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at approximately 1:15 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office said the man’s family has been notified.

Custody timeline and pending charges

The man had been arrested by the San Diego Police Department on February 14, 2026, and entered Sheriff’s custody on February 15, 2026, authorities said. At the time of his death, he was facing charges of murder and assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury.

  • Date found in medical crisis: March 8, 2026

  • Date of death: March 10, 2026

  • Time in Sheriff’s custody: Feb. 15–March 10, 2026

Investigations and oversight notifications

The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is conducting an investigation, consistent with department protocol for in-custody deaths. The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board was also notified, authorities said. The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Deputies “immediately activated 9-1-1, requested assistance from the facility’s medical staff, and began life-saving measures,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its public summary of events.

Broader context: renewed attention on jail safety and medical response

The death comes amid continuing public focus on conditions and emergency response inside San Diego County’s detention facilities. In recent years, multiple in-custody deaths have prompted litigation, audits, and discussions about medical and mental health care access, supervision practices, and monitoring in housing units—particularly for people held alone or experiencing behavioral health crises. County and Sheriff’s officials have said reforms are underway while additional reviews remain active.

Authorities have not released the man’s name in the initial death notice, and details about the underlying criminal case and the circumstances leading up to the incident were not disclosed in the Sheriff’s Office summary. The Medical Examiner’s findings are expected to clarify the cause and manner of death after autopsy and investigative review.
