Incident reported on Lyons Peak Road; standoff ends with suspected self-inflicted death

San Diego County Sheriff’s Office homicide investigators are examining a shooting in Jamul that left one person wounded and ended the next morning when the suspected gunman was found dead inside a residence following an hours-long standoff.

Deputies were dispatched shortly before 2 p.m. Monday to the 15000 block of Lyons Peak Road after a report of gunfire. One victim suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Sheriff’s Office did not release the victim’s identity or condition in the initial public information issued following the shooting.

As the response unfolded, the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail—commonly referred to as SWAT—was sent to the scene amid concerns that the suspected shooter had barricaded inside a home. Authorities attempted to reach the suspect by phone and by public-address announcements, maintaining a perimeter while working to resolve the situation.

The standoff lasted about 16 hours and extended into Tuesday morning.

At approximately 8:59 a.m. Tuesday, authorities reported that the man believed to have barricaded himself inside the Jamul residence had been found dead from what was described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. No additional injuries to deputies or the public were reported in the available incident summary.

What investigators typically work to establish in early stages

Homicide investigations into shootings generally focus on confirming the sequence of events, identifying involved parties, and collecting physical and digital evidence that can clarify motive and timeline. In cases involving a barricade, investigators also document communications efforts, tactical decisions, and the point at which the incident moved from an active threat to a secured scene.

  • Witness interviews and canvassing for additional victims or unreported impacts (including property damage)
  • Ballistics and firearms-related evidence processing
  • Review of available video sources, including nearby cameras when present
  • Coordination with medical examiners when a death occurs at the scene

Information not yet made public

Authorities have not publicly detailed the relationship, if any, between the victim and the suspect, nor have they released information on a potential motive, the type of firearm involved, or whether there were prior calls for service tied to the location. The Sheriff’s Office also has not announced whether the victim’s injuries were considered life-threatening.

The investigation is expected to continue as detectives process the scene and complete follow-up interviews and forensic analysis.
