San Marcos fatal pedestrian crash investigation continues after reports of hit-and-run suspect fleeing on foot

What investigators have confirmed so far

A fatal traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a minivan is under investigation in San Marcos after deputies responded to reports of a crash the evening of Feb. 6, 2026.

Deputies were called at about 7:50 p.m. to the 1100 block of West Mission Road. At the scene, authorities determined a black Honda Odyssey minivan had collided with a pedestrian. The pedestrian was found in westbound lanes, and first responders attempted life-saving measures. The person was pronounced dead at about 8:15 p.m.

Status of the driver and key unanswered questions

Investigators have publicly reported that the driver of the minivan remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies. Authorities have not released the pedestrian’s identity in the initial incident briefing, and no arrests were announced in the same release.

Investigators also said it was not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision. That assessment typically depends on a review of evidence that can include witness statements, vehicle and roadway conditions, and forensic and toxicology results when applicable.

The investigation is being handled by the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station Traffic Unit.

Why early reports can conflict

The incident has circulated publicly with language associated with a “hit-and-run” and a suspect “fleeing on foot.” In the verified public information released by local authorities for this specific fatal collision, however, the driver is described as staying at the scene and cooperating. That distinction matters because the legal and investigative pathways differ substantially between a driver who remains and one who leaves before providing required information and assistance.

In the early hours and days after a serious crash, conflicting descriptions can emerge as agencies sort out timelines, vehicle involvement, and witness accounts. Investigators sometimes later determine that initial witness impressions do not match subsequent findings, or that multiple incidents occurred in proximity but were unrelated.

What the public can do

Authorities have asked anyone who witnessed the collision or has information that may help investigators reconstruct what happened to contact the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station. Investigators have not described additional vehicles involved in the fatal crash in their initial announcement.

What to watch for next

  • Identification of the victim, typically after next-of-kin notifications.

  • Any clarifying statements about whether the collision occurred on West Mission Road, West San Marcos Boulevard, or a nearby segment referenced in early accounts.

  • Findings on contributing factors, including speed, lighting, roadway design, and impairment.

  • Any enforcement action, if investigators determine a violation contributed to the death.

The Sheriff’s Department has said the case remains under investigation.
