Aztecs stay unbeaten in conference play after decisive third-quarter surge at Viejas Arena

San Diego State’s women’s basketball team continued its run atop the Mountain West on Saturday, Jan. 31, beating Nevada 67-54 at Viejas Arena. The victory pushed the Aztecs to 17-3 overall and kept them perfect in conference play at 11-0, extending their winning streak to 13 games.

The game followed a familiar formula for San Diego State during its streak: early control, defensive pressure and balanced scoring. The Aztecs opened with a 10-3 start and never trailed, though Nevada trimmed the margin to keep the game competitive into halftime. San Diego State led 30-27 at the break after a low-scoring second quarter.

The difference came out of the locker room. San Diego State won the third quarter 23-14 and used a 20-5 run to create separation, turning a one-possession game into a comfortable cushion. The Aztecs’ lead reached 20 points before Nevada closed the final minutes with a 7-0 run that narrowed the final margin.

Four in double figures; free throws and paint points tilt the margin

San Diego State placed four players in double figures. Naomi Panganiban led with 16 points, while Bailey Barnhard scored 13 points in limited minutes due to foul trouble. Nala Williams and Kaelyn Hamilton added 11 points apiece, with Hamilton doing most of her damage in the third quarter as the Aztecs’ run took shape.

Efficiency at the foul line also helped stabilize San Diego State’s offense during key stretches. The Aztecs went 14-for-15 on free throws, and they consistently generated higher-percentage looks closer to the basket, outscoring Nevada 36-24 in the paint.

  • Final score: San Diego State 67, Nevada 54
  • Halftime: San Diego State 30, Nevada 27
  • Third quarter: San Diego State 23, Nevada 14

Defense continues to define SDSU’s conference pace

Nevada, now 7-14 overall and 3-8 in Mountain West play, struggled to score efficiently against San Diego State’s half-court defense. The Wolf Pack shot 33% from the field (20-of-60) and finished 4-of-13 from three-point range. The Aztecs’ defensive performance marked their 13th time this season holding an opponent under 40% shooting, a threshold tied closely to their win column.

The result also reinforced the gap between a first-place San Diego State side and a Nevada team searching for consistency as the regular season moves toward its final month.

San Diego State’s next game is scheduled for Wednesday at Grand Canyon, continuing a stretch of road tests with conference and postseason positioning in view.
