Aztecs’ second-half surge turns close game into lopsided result

San Diego State opened Mountain West play with an 81-58 victory over Air Force at Steve Fisher Court, using a decisive second half to turn a three-point halftime edge into a comfortable win on Space Force Night.

The game was competitive early. San Diego State carried a 33-30 lead into intermission after a first half that featured short runs rather than sustained separation. The Aztecs’ interior production helped steady them through the opening 20 minutes, with Magoon Gwath, Miles Heide and Pharaoh Compton collectively supplying efficient scoring and early rebounding impact.

Bench production and perimeter accuracy reshape the matchup

After the break, San Diego State’s offense changed pace and profile. The Aztecs shot 68% from the field in the second half and connected on seven 3-pointers at a 58% clip in the final 20 minutes, accelerating the scoring rate and widening the margin.

BJ Davis, coming off the bench, was central to that shift. He scored 17 of his game-high 19 points after halftime, hit all four of his 3-point attempts, and distributed four assists without a turnover. San Diego State’s second unit produced 47 points, providing both scoring depth and lineup flexibility as the Aztecs extended the lead beyond 20.

  • Final score: San Diego State 81, Air Force 58
  • Halftime: San Diego State led 33-30
  • Second-half shooting: San Diego State 68% from the field
  • Bench points: San Diego State 47

Defense and rebounding create extra possessions

The Aztecs paired their offensive efficiency with defensive control, limiting Air Force to 41% shooting overall and 33% from 3-point range. San Diego State also won the rebounding battle 35-26, including 13 offensive rebounds that contributed to 16 second-chance points.

Heide led all players with eight rebounds, continuing a pattern of strong work on the glass. Several of San Diego State’s momentum-building stretches were fueled by extra possessions and quick conversions, a combination that made it difficult for Air Force to keep pace once the lead expanded.

San Diego State’s game plan took clearer shape after halftime: defend without fouling, rebound decisively, and space the floor with efficient 3-point shooting.

What the result means next

The win moved San Diego State to 1-0 in Mountain West play and extended its winning streak to three games. The Aztecs’ next test was set as a road matchup against Arizona on Saturday, Dec. 20, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Pacific.
