Investigation opened after welfare check leads deputies to a deceased person

San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a death in Fallbrook after a person was found dead inside a residence on Willow Heights Road. The Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit has taken over the case as investigators work to determine the circumstances and manner of death.

The response began on April 23, 2025, when deputies were called to a home in the 3000 block of Willow Heights Road at about 9:30 a.m. A reporting party had gone to check on the residence and believed they may have seen a body inside. Deputies entered and confirmed a deceased individual was inside the home. Homicide investigators responded shortly afterward and opened an active investigation.

What is confirmed so far, and what remains unknown

Authorities have not publicly identified the deceased person, released an estimated age, or described any injuries. Investigators have also not said whether the death appears connected to a crime, nor have they announced any arrests or named any suspects.

At this stage, the case is being handled as a death investigation by the Homicide Unit, a step that can occur in a range of situations, including when the cause of death is not immediately clear. Investigators typically seek to establish a timeline, identify who last had contact with the deceased, and determine whether evidence supports foul play or another explanation.

How death investigations typically proceed in San Diego County

  • Scene processing and evidence collection, including photographs and documentation of the residence and surrounding area.

  • Interviews with the reporting party, neighbors, family members, and anyone with recent contact.

  • Coordination with the Medical Examiner for identification and forensic examination to determine cause and manner of death.

  • Review of potential digital, financial, and communications records when relevant to building a timeline.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the case to contact San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tips can be submitted anonymously, and information leading to an arrest may qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.

Public safety guidance for residents

Authorities encourage community members to report information that could help establish where the person was last seen, recent visitors to the residence, or any unusual activity in the area around the time deputies were called. Officials have not issued any public alerts indicating an ongoing threat connected to the case.

The investigation remained ongoing as of the most recent update, and additional details are expected if and when investigators can confirm the identity of the deceased and the cause of death.
