San Diego City College and community groups mark Martin Luther King Jr. legacy at 44th parade

A long-running San Diego tradition returns to the Embarcadero
San Diego City College and other San Diego Community College District participants joined community organizations on Sunday, January 18, 2026, for the 44th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade along Harbor Drive downtown. The event began at 11 a.m. and followed a roughly 1.2-mile route, with marchers staging on Harbor Drive between Grape and Ash streets before proceeding southbound and dispersing near Seaport Village.
The 2026 parade theme was “Hope in Action: A Dream Still Unfolding,” reflecting the continued focus on civic participation and youth engagement that has defined the event’s public messaging and programming in recent years.
Who organizes the parade, and what it supports
The parade is coordinated by the Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., together with the San Diego Alpha Foundation. Event materials describe the parade as a large civic celebration featuring floats, high school bands, drill teams, colleges and universities, fraternities and sororities, churches, and youth organizations. Organizers also state that the event supports scholarship opportunities for San Diego youth.
City College participation highlights education and workforce training
Within the district’s contingent, education and workforce programs used the parade as a public-facing showcase of students’ work and campus involvement. San Diego College of Continuing Education highlighted a student-built float produced by its welding program. The float design centered on a large pop-up-book concept depicting Dr. King’s “Dream,” built from metal and other materials, and incorporated multiple moving components intended to create motion for spectators along the route.
District participation also included a call for public involvement, with advance sign-ups for marchers and limited distribution of event T-shirts to early-arriving participants.
Parade features and related events
In addition to marching contingents, the broader event lineup described for the 2026 parade included an MLK 5K walk/run and a festival component associated with the day’s activities along the waterfront corridor.
