Safety Projects and Transit Maintenance Affect Tuesday Morning Commute

Caltrans Safety Projects Begin on I-5 and SR-56
Commuters in San Diego should prepare for increased activity and potential lane shifts as Caltrans District 11 officially activates two major safety-related projects today, Tuesday, February 10, 2026. The first project focuses on State Route 56, where crews are implementing bike and pedestrian safety enhancements. Motorists should be mindful of workers near the shoulder and possible intermittent lane closures as this nearly $600,000 project gets underway.
Additionally, a significant safety initiative targeting wrong-way driver prevention and pedestrian safety is active today on Interstate 5. This project, valued at over $5.5 million, involves the installation of advanced warning systems and infrastructure improvements along key segments of the I-5 corridor. While most work is scheduled to avoid peak rush hours, drivers may notice staging equipment and temporary signage that could cause minor bottlenecks near downtown and coastal interchanges.
MTS Trolley and Bus Stop Adjustments
Public transit riders using the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) face several accessibility challenges this morning. At the Grossmont Transit Center, both elevators remain out of service for critical maintenance. This outage is expected to last through February 13. Passengers requiring elevator access are advised to use Bus Route 852 as a shuttle alternative to reach the upper level or the trolley platform. Additionally, the escalators at the SDSU Station are currently offline, requiring passengers to utilize the elevators, ramps, or stairs.
Bus commuters should also be aware of ongoing stop closures. The westbound stop at University Avenue and Vermont Street, serving Routes 1, 10, and 11, remains closed due to long-term construction. This closure is slated to continue through late March, and riders are redirected to the stop at University Avenue and 9th Avenue. Furthermore, Route 10 is experiencing a temporary stop closure at the intersection of Pacific Highway and Enterprise Street, with passengers advised to use nearby stops at Old Town Transit Center or Veteran’s Village.
Pacific Beach and Regional Traffic Reminders
In Pacific Beach, traffic along Garnet Avenue near Gresham Street has returned to its regular flow following the conclusion of investigations into a tragic hit-and-run incident over the weekend. Local businesses that were temporarily closed during the investigation are expected to resume normal operations today. However, the incident has prompted renewed calls for safety, and the San Diego Police Department is maintaining a visible presence in the area to monitor speed and pedestrian right-of-way.
As February is designated as Speed Safety Awareness Month, law enforcement throughout the county is conducting extra patrols to enforce posted speed limits. With clear weather conditions reported across the region, traffic is moving at typical Tuesday volumes, though the new Caltrans work zones on the I-5 and SR-56 are the primary areas of concern for those looking to avoid delays.
