A late corner sequence rescued a point after San Diego twice held the lead

Real Salt Lake scored an 84th-minute equalizer Sunday, March 22, to earn a 2-2 draw with San Diego FC at Snapdragon Stadium, halting San Diego’s chance to pull clear in the early Western Conference standings.

San Diego led twice through set-piece-driven sequences and appeared positioned to close out the match after going ahead shortly after halftime. Real Salt Lake, however, stayed within reach and ultimately leveled the score from close range following a corner in the final minutes.

How the goals unfolded

The match opened with Real Salt Lake striking first. In the 14th minute, Sergi Solans scored with a header from the center of the box, finishing a cross delivered by Juan Manuel Sanabria to put the visitors ahead 1-0.

San Diego’s response came in the 27th minute. Marcus Ingvartsen finished from very close range following a set-piece situation to make it 1-1, bringing the home side level before halftime.

San Diego moved in front in the 55th minute when Anders Dreyer scored from the center of the box. Amahl Pellegrino was credited with the assist after a set-piece situation, giving San Diego a 2-1 advantage and shifting the match toward a home win.

Real Salt Lake’s equalizer arrived in the 84th minute. Victor Olatunji scored from very close range after a corner, with Morgan Guilavogui providing the assist via a cross that followed the set-piece sequence. The goal tied the match 2-2 and stood as the final score.

  • 14’: Solans (RSL) from Sanabria cross — 0-1
  • 27’: Ingvartsen (SD) — 1-1
  • 55’: Dreyer (SD) assisted by Pellegrino — 2-1
  • 84’: Olatunji (RSL) assisted by Guilavogui — 2-2

Key moments and game management

Beyond the scoring, the second half included at least one video review moment: a 61st-minute VAR decision resulted in no penalty for San Diego, preserving the 2-1 scoreline at that point and keeping Real Salt Lake within a single goal.

Both teams made second-half adjustments, including San Diego bringing on Aníbal Godoy for David Vazquez and later replacing Pellegrino with Lewis Morgan, while Real Salt Lake introduced Stijn Spierings for Griffin Dillon. The closing stages tilted toward set pieces, culminating in the late corner that produced the equalizer.

The draw reflected a match in which each side generated decisive moments from restarts, with the final outcome shaped by execution in the penalty area on dead-ball situations.

With five MLS matchdays completed, the result left San Diego at 3-2-0 (11 points) and Real Salt Lake at 3-1-1 (10 points), keeping both clubs in the early mix in the Western Conference.
