Pacific Beach Elementary completes campus modernization with new TK-K building, renovated classrooms, expanded playfield access

Modernization project reaches completion after construction that began in 2023
Pacific Beach Elementary School in San Diego’s Pacific Beach neighborhood has completed a campuswide modernization that district leaders and the school community marked on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026. The project combines new early-learning facilities with upgrades across the broader campus footprint, reflecting a multi-year construction effort that began in fall 2023.
The work is part of a Whole Site Modernization initiative that also includes a joint-use recreation expansion intended to serve both students and the surrounding community outside school hours.
What was built and renovated on campus
The completed package of improvements includes a new Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten building, along with upgrades aimed at classroom quality, campus safety, and student support spaces. District officials described the TK-K building as designed around modern classroom layouts and collaborative work areas, connected to outdoor play space.

- Secure main campus entryway
- Renovations to existing classrooms
- Upgrades to the student services facility and multipurpose room
- Kitchen upgrades and restroom improvements

Joint-use field expansion: community access expected in late spring 2026
In addition to the instructional and building upgrades, the modernization effort includes an expanded grass joint-use playfield. The joint-use expansion is scheduled to open to the public in late spring 2026 and is planned to add new recreation and circulation features. The joint-use concept is designed to allow community access after school hours and during school breaks.
- Walking and running track
- New basketball court
- Additional trees and site amenities including a drinking fountain
- Secure perimeter fencing and a public access gate
A campus with nearly a century of history, now reconfigured for current needs
Pacific Beach Elementary, located along Tourmaline Street, first opened in 1930 and has undergone multiple building additions and changes over decades as neighborhood enrollment and program needs evolved. The latest modernization continues that pattern, replacing older configurations—including portable classrooms—with permanent facilities and upgraded campus systems.
District officials said the work was funded through community-approved bond measures and aligns with broader district efforts to update early-grade facilities across San Diego Unified schools.
