The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality (DEHQ) has issued critical health advisories for several coastal areas effective Thursday, February 26, 2026. Following recent urban runoff and ongoing sewage concerns, residents and visitors are urged to avoid water contact in the following locations:

  • Water Closures: The ocean shoreline from the U.S.-Mexico International Border north to North Beach in Coronado remains closed to all swimming and surfing due to sewage contamination.
  • Bacteria Advisories: High bacteria levels exceeding state health standards have been recorded at La Jolla Cove, the Children's Pool in La Jolla, and the San Diego River outlet (Ocean Beach Dog Beach).
  • General Rain Advisory: A general advisory is in effect for all coastal bays and beaches. Public health officials recommend avoiding water contact for at least 72 hours following any rain event to prevent illness from urban runoff.
