LSU clinches early as San Diego’s remaining matches end after the deciding fourth point

No. 5 LSU opened its home dual schedule with a 4-0 women’s tennis win over the University of San Diego on Monday, Jan. 19, at the LSU Tennis Complex in Baton Rouge, completing a shutout that ended once the Tigers secured the match-deciding fourth point.

The result followed LSU’s 7-0 season-opening win over Northwestern State on Jan. 17 and extended LSU’s early-season momentum after the program posted a 24-8 record last season and reached the NCAA quarterfinal round for the first time. The dual against San Diego was part of LSU’s opening homestand, scheduled two days after the Northwestern State match.

How the 4-0 was decided

College tennis duals are decided first to four points, with one point awarded for doubles (best-of-three) and one point for each singles match (six total). The contest ended at 4-0 once LSU reached the threshold, with remaining matches either stopped or left unfinished under standard dual-match procedures.

  • LSU secured the clinching point at No. 2 singles, where Florentine Dekkers defeated Athina Grigoriadou 6-1, 6-1.
  • Before the clincher, Alexia Marginean earned a straight-sets win at No. 5 singles over Lolita Hukasian, 6-1, 6-1.
  • With the match already decided, LSU completed additional singles wins, including Kenna Erickson over Martina Acebedo at No. 3, 6-2, 6-0, and Addison Lanton over Maria Farina at No. 1, 6-1, 6-0.

What the shutout means for San Diego

For San Diego, the loss represented an early-season test against a top-five opponent in a road environment. The Toreros entered the matchup as a program that has recently demonstrated competitiveness against high-level lineups, including a 5-2 dual loss to LSU in San Diego on Jan. 17, 2025, in which San Diego won two singles points.

Dual matches can end quickly when a team strings together early straight-set wins in the middle of the singles lineup, especially when the clinching point is secured on a court that finishes ahead of the top positions.

Next on the schedule

LSU’s January slate includes hosting duties connected to ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Baton Rouge site later in the month, with teams scheduled to compete at the LSU Tennis Complex beginning Jan. 24. San Diego, meanwhile, continues its early dual season schedule with additional nonconference opportunities designed to build match play before the heart of its spring calendar.
