Morning Outlook: Reopenings and Connector Status

San Diego commuters can expect a mostly standard Friday morning commute as several nightly construction projects wrap up early today, February 6. As of 5:00 a.m., the connectors from eastbound State Route 94 to northbound State Route 125, as well as the westbound State Route 54 to southbound Interstate 805, have reopened following scheduled maintenance. However, motorists traveling through the I-8 corridor should prepare for the return of nightly work later this evening.

Major Freeway and Roadwork Updates

  • Interstate 8 and I-805 Interchange: Caltrans reports that the eastbound and westbound I-8 connectors to southbound I-805 will continue to see nightly closures from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. This specific phase of construction is scheduled to conclude on the morning of Saturday, February 7. Late-night drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes such as Interstate 15 or local arteries to avoid the work zone.
  • South County and Otay Mesa: Major construction activities remain ongoing along State Route 11 as part of the Otay Mesa East Port of Entry project. Commuters should expect heavy truck traffic and potential lane shifts near the Siempre Viva Road interchange. While no full closures are reported for today, the presence of heavy equipment may cause intermittent slowing.
  • Oceanside: Local authorities have advised caution near North Horne Street and the Interstate 5 corridor following an emergency response incident on Thursday. While all main freeway lanes are currently clear, secondary roads and residential access in the surrounding neighborhoods may see intermittent restrictions by utility and safety crews.

MTS and NCTD Transit Alerts

Public transit riders should take note of several long-term service changes and immediate accessibility alerts affecting routes today:

  • MTS Route 13: The southbound bus stop at El Cajon Boulevard and 43rd Street (Stop #10609) remains closed due to construction. Passengers are advised to catch the southbound Route 13 at the temporary A-frame stop located approximately 100 feet south of El Cajon Boulevard on 43rd Street. This detour is expected to remain in place until February 14.
  • Trolley Station Accessibility: Elevators at both the Grossmont and Grantville Trolley Stations are currently out of service for repairs. Riders requiring elevator access at the Grossmont Station should utilize Bus Route 852 as an alternative for travel between the platform and the upper level. Maintenance teams expect to restore service by February 13.
  • BREEZE Route 101: Construction on Coast Highway near La Costa Avenue has resulted in the closure of the nearside northbound bus stop. A temporary boarding area has been established nearby to accommodate North County commuters.

Commuter Reminders

The SANDAG Executive Committee is scheduled to meet today at 9:00 a.m. in downtown San Diego. While this will not impact freeway traffic, individuals visiting the downtown civic center area should anticipate higher-than-normal pedestrian activity and potential parking shortages near the meeting venue. The North County Transit District has confirmed that COASTER rail service is running on its regular Friday schedule today, with no Absolute Work Window closures planned for this weekend.
