Predawn fire draws emergency response in South Bay

A predawn fire that engulfed a parked motor home in San Ysidro left one man dead and prompted an active investigation into the cause of the blaze, authorities said.

The fire was reported at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday in the 400 block of West Calle Primera, a street that runs through a residential area near the southern end of San Diego. A witness reported hearing an explosive sound and then seeing the recreational vehicle catch fire, police said.

Victim pulled from the motor home; resuscitation attempts unsuccessful

Firefighters extinguished the flames and emergency crews removed an unresponsive adult man from inside the burned motor home. Life-saving efforts were attempted at the scene, but he was pronounced dead there, police said.

Authorities had not publicly released the man’s identity as of Thursday, pending notification of family and further confirmation steps typically required in fatal investigations.

Cause of the blaze under review

Investigators are working to determine what sparked the fire. Early indications described the incident as appearing accidental, though the determination remains preliminary while investigators examine the scene and collect evidence.

Fires involving motor homes and other recreational vehicles can present complex investigative issues because they may contain multiple ignition sources and fuel loads, including electrical systems, propane appliances, gasoline-powered components, and stored household items. In addition, the confined space of an RV can accelerate fire spread, complicate escape, and increase the likelihood of lethal smoke exposure.

What investigators typically look for in RV fires

In cases like this, investigators generally assess a range of factors before reaching conclusions. These steps can include documenting the fire’s origin area, reviewing whether utilities or fuel systems were involved, and determining whether any mechanical, electrical, or appliance failure played a role.

  • Fire patterns and the most damaged areas to help identify the likely origin point
  • Potential electrical issues, including batteries, wiring, or aftermarket modifications
  • Propane cylinders, lines, and appliances that may have fed the fire or triggered an explosion-like sound
  • Signs of accidental ignition sources, such as cooking equipment, heaters, or smoking materials
  • Whether the vehicle was occupied at the time the fire began and how quickly conditions became untenable

Authorities said the blaze was under investigation and that initial observations suggested it may have been accidental.

Ongoing case

No additional injuries were reported at the scene. Police and fire investigators continued their work Thursday, with the timeline for a final determination expected to depend on scene analysis and follow-up findings.

Anyone who witnessed the fire’s start or noticed unusual activity in the area around the time of the incident is encouraged to contact local authorities.
