Major I-805 South Bay Overhaul and Naval Base Security Exercises Lead Sunday Traffic Alerts

Significant Weekend Roadwork on I-805
Commuters in the South Bay should prepare for notable disruptions as Caltrans officially begins its multi-million dollar rehabilitation project on Interstate 805 this week. The project, which targets aging infrastructure dating back to the 1970s, involves repairing cracks, potholes, and drainage issues prone to flooding. For Sunday, February 1, drivers can expect intermittent weekend ramp shutdowns and lane reductions throughout the corridor, particularly in the southern portion between San Ysidro and Interstate 15.
Crews are currently working on adding new auxiliary lanes to improve traffic flow. Key areas of focus include the southbound stretch from H Street to Telegraph Canyon Road and northbound sections between 43rd Street and Imperial Avenue. Caltrans recommends utilizing Interstate 5 as the primary detour route for the duration of these weekend closures to avoid significant delays in the Chula Vista and National City areas.
Security Drills at San Diego Naval Installations
Naval Base San Diego and other regional installations are currently participating in the annual "Solid Curtain/Citadel Shield" force protection exercise. This large-scale security drill, which runs through February 6, is expected to cause temporary traffic increases and potential delays at all base entry points. Officials warn that shoppers at the Navy Exchange and Commissary, as well as those with medical appointments on base, should allow for extra travel time. While the exercise is a routine readiness test, it may involve temporary gate closures or enhanced security screening that can spill over into surrounding surface streets.
Public Transit Detours and Service Constraints
The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has issued several alerts for Sunday travelers:
- Route 115 Detour: Due to ongoing construction between College Avenue and Navajo Road, Route 115 Eastbound remains on a detour. Four bus stops are currently closed, including the stops at Navajo Rd & College Ave and College Ave & Camino Rico. This detour is expected to remain in place through February 6.
- Personnel Constraints: MTS continues to monitor potential service impacts on minibus and Access services due to ongoing personnel constraints at Transdev. Riders are encouraged to check real-time arrival data before heading to their stops.
New Traffic Laws and Driving Conditions
Effective today, February 1, 2026, several new California traffic regulations have officially gone into effect. Motorists are urged to familiarize themselves with updated safety requirements to avoid significant fines. Weather conditions for today remain favorable for driving, with sunny skies and highs reaching the mid-70s along the coast and up to 82 degrees in the inland valleys, ensuring clear visibility across the county's major arteries.
