Oklahoma’s early power surge decides five-inning result in Cathedral City
San Diego State opened play Thursday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 10-2 loss to Oklahoma in Cathedral City, California, a game ended after five innings under the run rule. The Sooners improved to 10-1, while the Aztecs moved to 8-3.
The matchup turned quickly on Oklahoma’s first-inning damage against San Diego State starter Key-annah Pu’a. Oklahoma stretched the lead decisively in the second. Isabela Emerling opened the inning with a home run, and the Sooners followed with a five-run sequence in which Kasidi Pickering, Gabbie Garcia, Ella Parker and Wells each drove in a run. In the circle, Oklahoma starter Mialia Guachino earned the win to move to 3-0, allowing two runs while striking out eight and issuing no walks over five innings. San Diego State’s Pu’a took the loss, falling to 1-1.
Wells’ second homer and a fifth-inning walk-off end it early
Wells added another two-run home run in the fourth to extend the Oklahoma lead to 9-2. In the fifth, Sydney Barker led off with a solo home run that ended the game at 10-2. Wells finished with two home runs and five RBIs, with her seventh homer of the season tying for Oklahoma’s team lead at the time of the result.
