Oklahoma’s early power surge decides five-inning result in Cathedral City

San Diego State opened play Thursday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 10-2 loss to Oklahoma in Cathedral City, California, a game ended after five innings under the run rule. The Sooners improved to 10-1, while the Aztecs moved to 8-3.

The matchup turned quickly on Oklahoma’s first-inning damage against San Diego State starter Key-annah Pu’a. After a leadoff single set the table, Oklahoma freshman catcher Kendall Wells hit a two-run home run to center field with two outs, putting the Sooners ahead 2-0. San Diego State recorded a first-inning single from Jazmin Williams but did not advance a runner into scoring position in that frame.

Five-run second inning creates separation

Oklahoma stretched the lead decisively in the second. Isabela Emerling opened the inning with a home run, and the Sooners followed with a five-run sequence in which Kasidi Pickering, Gabbie Garcia, Ella Parker and Wells each drove in a run. The inning pushed the margin to 7-0 and left San Diego State needing immediate answers to remain within reach.

  • Score by inning: Oklahoma led 2-0 after one and 7-0 after two.
  • Oklahoma finished with 10 runs on 10 hits and no errors.
  • San Diego State finished with two runs on four hits and no errors.

Ignacio provides SDSU’s scoring with third-inning two-run homer

San Diego State’s runs came on one swing. In the top of the third, Jade Ignacio hit a two-run home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 7-2. The homer was Ignacio’s second of the season and followed a 2025 season in which she entered the year with one career home run.

In the circle, Oklahoma starter Mialia Guachino earned the win to move to 3-0, allowing two runs while striking out eight and issuing no walks over five innings. San Diego State’s Pu’a took the loss, falling to 1-1.

Wells’ second homer and a fifth-inning walk-off end it early

Wells added another two-run home run in the fourth to extend the Oklahoma lead to 9-2. In the fifth, Sydney Barker led off with a solo home run that ended the game at 10-2. Wells finished with two home runs and five RBIs, with her seventh homer of the season tying for Oklahoma’s team lead at the time of the result.

Final: Oklahoma 10, San Diego State 2 (5 innings)

What’s next for San Diego State

San Diego State’s schedule at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic continues Friday with two games: UC Riverside in the afternoon followed by Saint Mary’s in the early evening. The Aztecs will look to convert limited baserunner chances into runs after producing four hits against Oklahoma’s pitching.
