High Surf and Coastal Clouds: A Cool February Friday for San Diego

Morning: A Chilly Start with Mountain Mist
San Diegans waking up this Friday, February 6, 2026, will notice a distinct winter chill in the air. Morning temperatures are starting in the upper 30s to low 40s for inland regions, while coastal communities like Encinitas and Carlsbad are seeing slightly milder daybreak temperatures in the mid-50s. While the city remains dry, the National Weather Service has noted that very light rain may move through the mountain areas during the early hours. Total accumulations in the peaks are expected to remain under a tenth of an inch, providing just enough moisture to dampen the trails but not enough to cause significant runoff.
Afternoon: Peak Temps Struggle to Hit Seventy
As we move into the afternoon, the region will remain under a blanket of partly to mostly cloudy skies. While we have seen warmer temperatures earlier in the week, today’s highs are expected to stay largely shy of the 70-degree mark. Coastal areas can expect a peak between 65 and 69 degrees Fahrenheit. Inland valleys, including Poway and Escondido, will reach slightly higher, ranging from 67 to 72 degrees. The low deserts remain the warmest spot in the county, with Borrego Springs pushing toward 75 to 80 degrees. Despite the cloud cover, humidity levels will hover around 80%, making the air feel a bit heavier than usual for a San Diego winter day.
Evening and Alerts: High Surf Warning for Beachgoers
By evening, the cloud cover will persist, maintaining a consistent temperature drop back into the 50s. While the weather over land is relatively calm, the primary concern for today remains at the shoreline. A High Surf Advisory is currently in effect for all San Diego County beaches. Forecasts indicate breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet, creating dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Inexperienced swimmers are advised to stay out of the water, and observers should keep a safe distance from jetties and rocky outcroppings.
