Morning Commute Overview

Commuters in San Diego should prepare for a mix of construction-related slowdowns and event traffic this Wednesday, February 18, 2026. While the morning rush began with moderate flow on most major arteries, specific regional impacts on the I-805 and local events in the Gaslamp Quarter are expected to influence travel times throughout the day.

Gaslamp Quarter: Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday Delays

Today marks the conclusion of the Gaslamp Mardi Gras and San Diego Fat Tuesday celebrations. Commuters and visitors should expect heavy pedestrian activity and localized traffic congestion in the downtown area, particularly near 5th Avenue and Broadway. While major street closures for the event are being phased out, residual crowds and delivery vehicles may cause intermittent delays through the evening. If your commute involves downtown San Diego, consider using the UC San Diego Blue Line or the Silver Line Vintage Trolley to bypass street-level congestion.

Major Highway Alerts and Construction

  • Interstate 805 (South Bay): The ongoing $235 million rehabilitation project continues to affect the southern corridor. Drivers between San Ysidro and the I-15 interchange should watch for lane reductions and work crews. Caltrans suggests using Interstate 5 as a primary detour for those looking to avoid the heavy construction zones between Palm Avenue and Main Street, where a new bike trail is also under development.
  • Interstate 8 (Alpine Area): A high wind advisory remains in effect for the Alpine region. Drivers of high-profile vehicles, such as trucks and SUVs, are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the mountain passes east of the city.
  • State Route 1 (Coastal Flooding): For those traveling north of San Diego County, be aware that SR-1 is experiencing significant closures. Recent flooding has shut down sections near Soloman Road, and further north, a 45-mile stretch remains closed due to rockslides. Local coastal commuters should stick to I-5 for northbound travel.

Public Transit Updates

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has several active service alerts for Wednesday:

  • Route 30: Starting today, February 18, the northbound bus stop at Mission Blvd & Wilbur Av (#12267) is temporarily closed for bus pad installation. This closure will remain in effect 24/7 through February 26. Passengers are advised to use the alternative stop at Mission Blvd & Law St (#12268).
  • Route 11: Sidewalk repairs near University Ave & 3rd Ave continue to affect service. The northbound stop at this location will be closed from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM today.
  • Route 855: A long-term detour remains in place for the northbound route through February 23, affecting five stops along Calavo Drive.

Commuters are also reminded that MTS recently increased frequency on the Rapid 235 route to every 15 minutes during midday hours, providing a more efficient alternative for those traveling between Downtown and Escondido along the I-15 corridor.
