San Diego Commute: Free Public Transit and Overnight Construction Updates

Good morning, San Diego. It is Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Whether you are heading into the office or navigating the county’s freeway network, today offers a unique opportunity for commuters to save on their morning journey, alongside several ongoing infrastructure projects that may affect your late-night travel plans.

Transit Equity Day: Free Rides on NCTD

Today is Transit Equity Day, held in honor of Rosa Parks' birthday. In a significant announcement for North County residents, the North County Transit District (NCTD) is offering free rides all day long. This initiative aims to encourage public transit use and recognize the historical importance of transit accessibility. The fare-free program includes the following services:

  • COASTER commuter trains
  • SPRINTER hybrid rail
  • BREEZE buses
  • FLEX and LIFT paratransit services

Commuters using the NCTD+ micro-transit service in the San Marcos and Vista zones can also participate by using the promo code ROSAPARKS in the NCTD+ app. Please note that while all NCTD modes are free today, these benefits do not extend to the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) or Amtrak’s Rail2Rail program.

Major Freeway Work and Connector Closures

While the morning commute is looking largely clear of major long-term disruptions, Caltrans District 11 is continuing work on several key arteries that will impact evening travel. Drivers should plan for the following:

  • SR-54 to I-805: The westbound State Route 54 connector to southbound Interstate 805 is scheduled for nightly closures. This work is part of ongoing maintenance and will continue through Thursday, February 5, from 10:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
  • I-805 South Bay Rehabilitation: Heavy construction continues in the South Bay area as crews rehabilitate aging infrastructure. Expect lane reductions and potential ramp delays between H Street and Telegraph Canyon Road as work progresses on new auxiliary lanes.
  • I-5 Southbound: Overnight construction and signal maintenance near the Coronado/South Bay area were scheduled to conclude at 5:00 a.m. today. Early commuters should remain alert for any residual equipment on the shoulders.

MTS and Local Transit Notes

The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) reports that temporary bus stop closures on westbound Routes 7 and 10 were scheduled to end at 6:00 a.m. this morning following pipeline repairs. Stops near the University and College areas should be fully operational for the morning peak. Additionally, while overnight track maintenance continues in the downtown area through the end of today, Trolley service remains on its regular schedule and is not impacted by the noise-related maintenance work.

Safe travels this Wednesday, and consider taking advantage of the fare-free transit if your commute takes you through the North County corridor!
