Tuesday Commute Overview: Smooth Morning with Evening Constraints

Commuters in San Diego can expect a relatively typical morning drive today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Early morning reports indicate that major arteries such as Interstate 15 are currently free of significant traffic restrictions. However, as the day progresses into the evening, several large-scale infrastructure projects will trigger closures that could significantly impact return trips, particularly for those traveling through the South Bay and North County areas.

Major Highway Alerts and Overnight Closures

The most significant impact for today's travel involves the ongoing I-805 South Bridge Safety and Sound Walls project. Caltrans has announced a series of evening closures scheduled to run through March 5. Starting tonight at 9:00 p.m., motorists should prepare for the following:

  • SR-54 to I-805 Connector: The connector from westbound State Route 54 to southbound Interstate 805 will be fully closed to allow for bridge construction.
  • I-805 Lane Reductions: Multiple lanes on southbound I-805 near the Telegraph Canyon Road area will be restricted between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
  • Telegraph Canyon Road: Localized closures on Telegraph Canyon Road will occur in conjunction with the freeway work, requiring drivers to follow posted detour signs.

In North County, while the major overnight closure of State Route 78 in Escondido is not scheduled until Wednesday night, commuters may notice increased activity and early staging on the shoulders near the I-15 interchange today. This $126 million SR-78 Asset Management Project is moving into a phase that will eventually require full lane closures between I-15 and North Broadway, so drivers are encouraged to begin planning alternate routes now.

Public Transit and Local Roadwork

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has several active alerts for Tuesday that may affect your bus or trolley connections:

  • Route 7: The bus stop at Front Street and B Street in Downtown San Diego is temporarily closed between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. for construction. Passengers should use the alternate stop at Broadway and 3rd Avenue.
  • Routes 1, 10, and 11: The westbound stop at University Avenue and Vermont Street remains closed 24/7 as part of long-term construction. Commuters are advised to use the stop at University and 9th Avenue.
  • SDSU Transit Center: Maintenance continues on the escalators at the SDSU Station. Elevators and ramps remain fully operational for passengers with mobility needs.

Commuter Strategy

With evening closures looming on the I-805, Interstate 5 is expected to serve as the primary detour for South Bay travelers heading home late tonight. For daytime local travel, be aware of a possible one-day closure on Cougar Pass Road between Alps Way and Meadow Glen Way East for utility pole replacements. As always, allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes of buffer time for your evening commute to account for early construction bottlenecking.
