Sunday Morning Traffic Outlook

Commuters and weekend travelers in San Diego should prepare for a mix of event-related closures and ongoing infrastructure improvements this Sunday, February 15, 2026. While the morning typically offers lighter traffic, major community events in Coronado and Balboa Park are expected to create localized bottlenecks and significant detours. Drivers are encouraged to check transit schedules or plan alternative routes before heading out.

Coronado Valentine’s 10K and Road Closures

The most significant impact to morning travel is the annual Coronado Valentine’s 10K and 1 Mile Fun Run. Starting early this morning, several key thoroughfares in Coronado, including sections of Orange Avenue and streets surrounding Tidelands Park, are subject to rolling closures and restricted access. Travelers attempting to reach the Silver Strand should expect delays and increased pedestrian activity through the late morning hours. If you are not participating in the event, it is highly recommended to avoid the central Coronado area until after noon when the post-race festivities conclude.

Major Arteries and Ongoing Construction

Caltrans continues to move forward with several critical projects that may impact drive times on major freeways. On I-805, crews are active with pavement rehabilitation and the addition of auxiliary lanes, particularly between the South Bay and the I-15 interchange. Drivers should look out for narrowed lanes and reduced speed limits in these zones.

In the North County, the I-5 North Coast Corridor project remains a focal point. Expect intermittent shoulder work and potential lane shifts between Solana Beach and Carlsbad. Additionally, structural work continues on State Route 163 near Friars Road. This project involves widening the bridge over the San Diego River and may cause slow-moving traffic for those transitioning between the Mission Valley and Hillcrest areas.

Event Hotspots: Balboa Park and SeaWorld

Expect heavy congestion around Balboa Park today as the Chinese New Year Fair continues alongside the region-wide Museum Month. With many institutions offering half-off admission, parking lots in the Prado and near the San Diego Zoo are expected to reach capacity by mid-day. Similarly, SeaWorld is hosting concurrent Lunar New Year and Mardi Gras celebrations, which will likely lead to delays on Sea World Drive and around the Mission Bay area from 10:00 a.m. through the evening.

Public Transit Updates

The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is operating on a standard Sunday schedule today. However, riders should be aware that the recent January 2026 service changes are in effect. Many downtown bus routes have been truncated or moved to the 12th & Imperial Transit Center, and service on 10th and 11th Avenues has been discontinued. Furthermore, looking ahead to tomorrow, Monday, February 16, all MTS bus and Trolley lines will operate on a Saturday schedule in observance of Presidents Day.
