City Roundup: MLK Day Service Impacts and Public Health Advisories

Official Holiday Closures and Legislative Recess
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the City of San Diego has announced that all administrative offices will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026. This closure includes the San Diego Superior Court and the County Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk offices. The San Diego City Council is currently in a legislative recess, with no public meetings scheduled for Monday or Tuesday. Regular municipal business and committee hearings, including the Audit Committee, are set to resume on Wednesday, January 21.
Trash Collection and Landfill Operations
Despite the holiday closure of administrative offices, curbside collection of trash, recycling, and organic waste will proceed as scheduled on Monday, January 19, for residents served by the City’s Environmental Services Department. The Miramar Landfill, Greenery, and Recycling Center will also remain open during normal operating hours to accommodate public needs. However, residents are advised that container sales at the Miramar Place facility will be closed for the day. Residents not serviced directly by the City should verify holiday schedules with their private waste haulers.
Parking Enforcement Grace Period
The City’s Parking Enforcement office has issued a notice that several parking regulations will be suspended on Monday. Parking meters, time-restricted zones, yellow commercial zones, and posted street-sweeping routes will not be enforced. However, safety-related zones—specifically red, white, and blue (accessible) zones—will continue to be enforced at all times. In Balboa Park, municipal parking lots will offer free parking for holiday visitors, though the San Diego Zoo parking lots remain subject to their own specific regulations.
Public Health Advisory: Hantavirus Detection
The County Department of Environmental Health and Quality has issued a health advisory following the first hantavirus detection of 2026. A Western harvest mouse found near the Los Peñasquitos Ranch House tested positive for the virus during a routine inspection. Residents are urged to avoid stirring up dust in sheds, garages, or attics. If cleaning is necessary in areas where rodents may have nested, the county recommends using “wet-cleaning” methods with a 10 percent bleach solution rather than sweeping or vacuuming, which can aerosolize the virus.
Beach and Bay Water Quality Warning
A General Rain Advisory remains in effect for all San Diego County coastal beaches and bays. Due to recent winter storms and urban runoff, bacteria levels are elevated, particularly near storm drains and river outlets. Specific water contact closures are currently active for the Tijuana Slough, Imperial Beach, Silver Strand, and Coronado shorelines due to sewage contamination. Public health officials recommend avoiding all water contact for at least 72 hours following significant rainfall to prevent illness.
