Presidents’ Day Holiday Closures and Schedule Adjustments

In observance of the Presidents’ Day holiday on Monday, February 16, 2026, the City of San Diego has announced significant closures for public facilities and administrative offices. All City of San Diego administrative offices, recreation centers, and public swimming pools are closed for the duration of the day. Additionally, all city and county branch libraries will remain closed today, with regular operations scheduled to resume on Tuesday, February 17, at 9:30 a.m.

While most public buildings in Balboa Park—including the Botanical Building and the Municipal Gym—are closed to the public, several outdoor recreational areas remain open. Golf courses will operate under holiday rates, and Mission Trails Regional Park, Chollas Lake, and city reservoirs including El Capitan, Miramar, Murray, and San Vicente are open for standard holiday hours. Residents are encouraged to check with individual museums in Balboa Park for their specific holiday operating schedules.

Uninterrupted Curbside Services and Parking Enforcement

In a departure from other major holidays, curbside trash, recycling, and organic waste collection for customers served by the City’s Environmental Services Department will proceed as scheduled today, February 16. Residents should place their bins out by 6 a.m. as usual. For those utilizing private haulers, the city recommends verifying schedules directly with the provider. The Miramar Landfill and its associated recycling centers also remain open today.

Regarding parking, the city will not enforce the following on Monday, February 16:

  • Parking meters and associated time restrictions
  • Yellow commercial zones
  • Posted street-sweeping routes

Please be advised that red, white, and blue zones will continue to be enforced at all times to maintain public safety and accessibility.

Public Health Advisory: Seasonal Flu Surge and Vaccine Recall

San Diego County health officials have issued a high-level advisory following a sharp rise in influenza A cases. As of mid-February, more than 9,400 seasonal cases have been documented, with health experts warning of a particularly severe strain that causes symptoms lasting several weeks. Residents are urged to practice proper hygiene and stay home if feeling symptomatic.

Additionally, the County Health and Human Services Agency has highlighted a voluntary recall issued by the manufacturer for a single serial of IMRAB 3TF rabies vaccine. Providers are advised to review their current inventory for affected lots as per the official February 13 update.

Weather Advisory: High Surf and Storm Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for all San Diego coastal areas, effective from 10:00 a.m. today through early Thursday morning. A winter storm system is expected to bring widespread heavy rain, with a risk of urban flooding in low-lying areas such as Mission Valley and Sorrento Valley. City crews are currently monitoring more than 46,000 storm drains to mitigate potential blockages.

Upcoming City Council and Public Hearings

While the City Council is not in session today, a public hearing is scheduled for February 24, 2026, to discuss the future of the Ocean Beach Historic District. Residents are also reminded that the Council is currently reviewing a proposed $8,000 annual tax on short-term vacation rentals and unoccupied second homes, with a potential ballot measure expected later this year.
