Collision reported on westbound Interstate 8 near East Main Street

An Arizona man was killed after being struck by a vehicle while on westbound Interstate 8 in El Cajon, authorities said. The crash was reported at about 9:21 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2024, near the East Main Street area, triggering an emergency response and a continuing investigation.

Investigators said the man was on foot in an active travel lane when he was hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not immediately released publicly in initial reports, and the circumstances that brought him onto the freeway remained under review.

Driver remained at scene; impairment not suspected for the motorist

Authorities said the driver involved stopped and remained at the location. The driver was not reported injured. Early information from investigators indicated alcohol and drugs were not believed to be factors for the driver.

Freeway pedestrian collisions often require extended on-scene work because investigators must document the exact lane location, vehicle path, sightlines, lighting conditions, and any available witness accounts before reopening lanes.

Why freeway pedestrian investigations can be complex

In fatal pedestrian cases on high-speed roadways, investigators typically seek to establish:

  • where the pedestrian entered the roadway and how long they were in lanes of travel;
  • visibility conditions at the time of the collision, including lighting and traffic volume;
  • whether the driver had a reasonable opportunity to avoid impact;
  • any evidence of mechanical issues, distraction, or other contributing factors.

Authorities emphasized the investigation remained active and urged anyone who witnessed the collision or saw a pedestrian on the freeway moments beforehand to contact law enforcement.

Ongoing safety concern across the I-8 corridor

The fatality occurred in a region where Interstate 8 frequently carries dense nighttime traffic through East County. Separate incidents in recent years along I-8 and nearby surface streets have highlighted the persistent risk of pedestrians entering high-speed corridors, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Investigators in the El Cajon case have not publicly detailed why the man was on the freeway.

Officials continue to gather statements and review available information as they work to determine the circumstances leading up to the collision.
