35-year-old San Diego Central Jail detainee dies after medical distress; Sheriff’s Homicide Unit investigates circumstances

Death reported after early-morning medical emergency
A 35-year-old man held at San Diego Central Jail died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, after jail staff found him in medical distress inside his assigned cell during a medication distribution round, authorities said.
The man was discovered at about 4:30 a.m. slumped over a table. Deputies activated 9-1-1, requested additional medical support inside the facility, and began life-saving measures. Paramedics and the San Diego Fire Department continued those efforts upon arrival before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 8:30 a.m.
The man’s name has not been released as of Thursday, Feb. 19, pending notification of next of kin.
Custody timeline and pending charges
Authorities said the man had been in custody since Feb. 12, 2026. He was being held on charges of grand theft and violating a court order.
San Diego Central Jail, located at 1173 Front St. in downtown San Diego, is the county’s primary intake site for incarcerated men and has operated since 1998.
Multiple layers of review triggered by an in-custody death
The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is conducting an investigation, a standard procedure in county jail deaths intended to examine the circumstances leading up to the fatality, including actions taken by custody and medical personnel and the timeline of the emergency response.
Separately, the county’s Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board has been notified. The board’s mandate includes oversight of deaths connected to actions by sheriff’s deputies and probation officers. In recent years, county officials have moved to expand the oversight board’s role in in-custody death reviews, including authority to scrutinize the work of county employees and contractors involved in custody operations.
The cause and manner of death will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office following its postmortem process. Until that determination is made, officials have not described what medical condition precipitated the emergency.
Context: scrutiny of jail medical care and mortality trends
Custody deaths have been a persistent point of public attention in San Diego County, with prior audits and public reporting highlighting concerns about transparency, timeliness of reviews, and accountability in the wake of fatalities. The Sheriff’s Department has also reported reforms aimed at improving intake screening and access to medical records, and has said those changes coincided with a recent decline in annual in-custody deaths.
The identity of the deceased remains withheld pending family notification.
Investigators are reviewing the incident; the medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
The county’s civilian oversight board has been notified as part of the post-incident process.
If you or a loved one has information relevant to events inside a custody setting, document dates, times, and names involved; those details can be important during investigative and oversight reviews.
